This month, most of the watch brands in the watch industry will showcase their new creations at Basel’s annual watch fair, called Baselworld. Last month, the Richemont brands (think: Jaeger-LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, Lange & Söhne, Cartier, etc.) had their “fashion show” in Geneva during the International Haute Horlogerie Show or short SIHH. Among the novelties of this year there are beauties and beasts, and I believe that the beasts outnumbered the beauties. Let’s look at the beauties of this year and a ‘beast’.
Rolex has the honor of launching the “ugliest” beast this year. The new 44 mm yachtmaster II features a countdown mechanism in a very busy and “strong” sphere. Although the ‘normal’ Yachtmaster was never one of my favorites, I definitely prefer it in this case.
The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II models embody the spirit of the navigator. Inspired by the rich heritage that has bound Rolex to the world of sailing since the 1950s, the Yacht-Master combines function and style, while the Yacht-Master II brings together the best of Rolex technology to create a race chronograph designed for yacht racing.
18 CT GOLD Characteristics of the model
By operating its own exclusive foundry, Rolex has the unparalleled ability to mold 18-ct gold alloys of the highest quality. According to the proportion of silver, copper, platinum or palladium added, different types of 18 ct gold are obtained: yellow, pink or white. They are made with the purest metals and are meticulously inspected in an internal laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, before the gold is formed and formed with the same meticulous attention to quality. Rolex’s commitment to excellence begins at the source.
WHITE Characteristics of the model
The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, improving readability and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for a more intuitive reading of the clock. A luminescent disc on the hour hand distinguishes it clearly from the minute hand. The countdown of the Yacht-Master II can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that in a restart it returns to the previous configuration. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official countdown.
My absolute number 1 of the Beauties this year, is a simple classic style diving. The Longines Legend Diver is a reissue of a longines style diving watch from the sixties. The looks are very similar to its predecessor. This beauty comes in a 42mm steel case, on a vintage black synthetic strap with white stitching. There are two crowns, one to wind and adjust the time and one to operate the internal rotating dive bezel.
